Research Interests

Peter Weber’s research at LLNL focuses on microbial ecology and forensic signatures in biological and nuclear materials. He is currently a co-principal investigator (PI) on a DOE biofuels program, currently in its eleventh year, a co-PI on a newly-funded DOE soil carbon program, and PI on a LLNL-funded project focused on signatures in UO2 fuel pellets. He has developed new methods for linking microbial function and identity in complex microbial communities and has studied microbial nitrogen fixation, carbon fixation, and carbon cycling. He has also investigated forensic signatures in bacterial spores, vegetative cells, viruses, as well as a range of nuclear materials.

Weber’s experience with mass spectrometry and secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS) dates back to 1997 and is a major contributor to his work at LLNL. The NanoSIMS facility at LLNL, which Weber has run for the past fifteen years, is on the forefront of developing methods for analyzing biological, geological, and nuclear materials and correlating analyses with other microanalytical methods such as electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy. Work done at the facility, including developing methods to analyze viruses, cell membranes, and microarrays, pushes the limits of compositional sensitivity.

Weber also has an interest in salmon migration and population structure stretching back to his time as a PhD student at the University of California, Berkeley, where he developed geochemical methods for determining juvenile salmon rearing origin. He has continued this line of work at LLNL by focusing on reconstructing migration history and determining population structure in spawning populations.
