Background

Before becoming a nuclear theorist at LLNL in 2006, Ian Thompson was a professor of physics at the University of Surrey for eighteen years. Throughout his career, he has published over 237 articles in refereed journals, supervised 9 PhD research students, written a nuclear physics textbook, Nuclear Reactions for Astrophysics, and contributed the chapter on Coulomb functions to the new National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) Handbook of Mathematical Functions. He is fellow of the Institute of Physics in London and of the American Physical Society. Since 2005, he has been a nuclear physics subject editor for Computer Physics Communications.

Research Interests

Thompson’s research deals with coupled-channels and few-body models for nuclear structure and reactions, especially concerning halo nuclei. Since 2014, he has managed the nuclear data compilations for the LLNL programs as well as contributing new evaluations to LLNL and national collaborations.
