Dr. Pogue is the Accelerator Physics Group Leader in the National Security Engineering Division (NSED) at LLNL. Dr. Pogue received his B.A. in Physics at Carleton College in 2003 with research on medical therapy and fuel cells. Following Carleton, Dr. Pogue when to Texas A&M University where he obtained his M.S. and Ph.D. in Physics working on topics of Electron Cloud at CERN and Superconducting RF cavities and magnets in 2005 and 2011. After graduation, Dr. Pogue worked on the development of a high current cyclotron-based GW fission power plant until he received the Marie Curie-PSI Co-fund Fellowship in 2014 and moved to Switzerland, where he developed the next generation cyclotron RF cavities for the Paul Scherer Institute. After living in Switzerland, Dr. Pogue became a staff member at LLNL in 2016.
Dr. Pogue has worked on several DOE funded projects requiring large collaborative efforts related to accelerators, particularly Linear Induction Accelerators. Currently, Dr. Pogue leads four different teams in designing, executing, and constructing of accelerators and associated technology. Dr. Pogue is currently the Accelerator Technical Lead for the Scorpius Project, billion dollar class accelerator facility to be housed at the Nevada Test Site. This positions scope is located at Los Alamos National Lab. Additionally, for the Scorpius Project, Dr. Pogue is the Technical Lead for the Injector Diagnostics, Magnets, and Emitter, which is in support of Sandia National Labs Injector.
Dr. Pogue is also developing the next generation Linear Induction Accelerator systems for radiography. Under the Transformational Technologies LIA program at LLNL, Dr. Pogue and his team are developing accelerator hardware capable of radiographic cinematography. This provides 5 to 25 time more images and information to the current generation machines. Further pushing the envelope, the LION team is pushing to develop high gradient, compact, low SWAP LIA systems for a variety of uses and customers. Dr. Pogue has served as a publication reviewer, board member and Review Committee member, including Scientific Advisory Boards for IPAC in 23 & 24 and DOE Review Committees.
Research Interests:
Beam Modelling and Simulations, Beam Physics, Accelerators, injectors, cathodes, targets, and high power electron, proton, and neutrons sources.
