Research Interests

Dr. Albert Osterheld is the Deputy Division Leader of the Physics Division at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory and is currently serving as the Interim Division Leader. The division includes approximately 220 staff organized in sections conducting research in high energy density (HED) physics, condensed matter physics, magnetic fusion energy science and plasma physics, and applied physics. Research topics include materials and radiation at extreme conditions, magnetic and inertial fusion, space science and security, optics design, x-ray optics, and related applications in national security including systems modeling and evaluation and decision superiority.

Osterheld joined LLNL as a postdoc in the High Energy Density Division in 1987 and his research interests include ultraviolet and X-ray spectroscopy of plasmas and the atomic physics of highly-charged ions. He later worked for four years in the Nuclear Test and Experimental Science directorate supporting the underground x-ray laser program. He has served in various division management roles in the HED and Physics Divisions since 1997.

Osterheld has co-authored 154 papers and has an h-index of 38.
