Research Interests

Matzel’s research interests are focused on developing tools to detect and characterize nuclear proliferation activities using mass spectrometry and microanalysis of materials obtained through environmental sampling. These technologies support US monitoring capabilities for nonproliferation and arms control treaties and agreements. She applies similar techniques to develop a better understanding of the physical and chemical processes that shaped the origin of our solar system, from condensation of the first solid materials to the evolution of planetary bodies. She conducts this research primarily by measuring the chemical and isotopic compositions of primitive meteorites and cosmic dust using secondary ion mass spectrometry (NanoSIMS and conventional ion probe).
