Sue Marlais is the Deputy Chief Information Officer (CIO) at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL). Sue co-manages the CIO Program, which has responsibility for the leadership, management and financial oversight of all Institutional Information Technology (IT) activities, including unclassified networks, telecommunications, desktop lifecycle, enterprise applications, cyber security, and data center operations.
Prior to her current position Sue was the Division Leader for the Applications, Simulations and Quality (ASQ) Division within the Computation Directorate at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL). The Division provides computer science expertise to a diverse set of programs at LLNL. In addition, she was the IT Manager for Weapons and Complex Integration (WCI) Principle Directorate. In this capacity she is responsible for IT across the WCI Programs.
Sue joined LLNL in 1994 as a Computer Scientist working for the Program for Climate Model Diagnosis and Intercomparison Project (PCMDI). While working full time at PCMDI, she completed her Master’s Degree in Computer Science. In 1998, she became the first Computer Support Group Leader for DNT, where she was responsible for providing leadership and direction for DNT’s IT environment and staff of approximately 35. In 2003, Sue became the Deputy Division Leader for the Computer Systems Support (CSS) Division. In this capacity, she assisted in the management and leadership of a multi-discipline 250-person division that is responsible for Macintosh, Unix, Linux and Windows desktop and server support, and has lead several institutional IT projects leading LLNL towards a standards based IT approach. In 2006, Sue became the Division Leader and Director for the Center for Applications Development and Software Engineering (CADSE). The Center was responsible for the development and promulgation of best-practices in software development and software engineering methodologies.
Sue has 16 years of administrative and project management experience and extensive expertise in Information Technology and Computer Security.
