Dr. Steven Ashby is the Deputy Principal Associate Director for Science and Technology at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. He oversees institutional S&T activities via the Institutional S&T Office (ISTO), Strategic University Relations (SUR), and Industrial Partnerships and Commercialization (IPAC). He also coordinates S&T strategic planning and business development efforts within the principal directorate.

Prior to accepting this position in October 2007, Dr. Ashby was the Deputy Associate Director for Computing Applications and Research within the Laboratory's Computation Directorate. He oversaw the research and development activities of more than 500 computer scientists and mathematicians working on a variety of applications in the defense, energy, and life sciences. He was the founding Director of the Center for Applied Scientific Computing (1996-2002) and the national Thrust Area Leader for Advanced Scientific Computing for the Department of Homeland Security (2004-2006).

Dr. Ashby's own expertise and interests lie in computational mathematics and scalable numerical algorithms. He has published a number of papers and has worked in a variety of application areas, including groundwater modeling on massively parallel computers. He presently serves on several advisory boards and is active in the computational science community. He earned his Ph.D. in 1987 in Computer Science from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and joined the Laboratory in 1988.
